Altgeld Hall Virtual Event

With its iconic tower and pink sandstone construction, Altgeld Hall is one of the most easily recognized buildings on campus. Almost all alumni have taken a course or two in its hallowed halls.
The University of Illinois is embarking on a project to restore and renovate Altgeld Hall. We invite alumni to join us for a virtual event focused on the history of this iconic building and to learn more about the plans for its future.

About the Speakers |

Ryan Ross is assistant director of the University of Illinois Alumni Association’s history and traditions programs and curator of the Richmond Family Welcome Gallery at Alice Campbell Alumni Center. A two-time alumnus and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the U of I, Ryan holds a B.A. in English and a master's degree in library and information science. Prior to joining the Alumni Association’s staff in 2015, he was an archivist in the University Library's Illinois History and Lincoln Collections. Ryan is the author of a monograph on early Illinois newspapers and articles on University history, private libraries, film history, Illinois politics, and historical archaeology. |

Liam Flood is a 2020 LAS alumnus, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Liam works as a data analyst for Capital One in Washington, D.C. He served as a chimes player for the Altgeld chimes, which celebrated their 100 years of ringing on the Illinois campus on October 30. Flood is an official historian of the bells and played a central part of the centennial celebration plans. |

Sheldon Katz is a Professor of Mathematics and Special Advisor to the Dean for the Altgeld Hall Renovation. He is also the departmental liason to the Mathematics Development Advisory Board. His primary research interests are in the area of algebraic geometry and its interaction with theoretical physics, especially string theories and supersymmetric field theories. Sheldon was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013. |

Jeremy Tyson, is the chair of the Department of Mathematics. His research focuses on Geometric function theory, quasiconformal maps, analysis in nonsmooth metric spaces, and sub-Riemannian geometry. He was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012 and was awarded the LAS Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2012. |
